Last night at the tournament we had our first bad judge experience. Lets just start out with my stating, the reason I like judging Public Forum is due to the fact that it has less rules and is focused more on who did the better job. Yes, there is judging criteria and rules that should/must be followed but when you move above the novice level the debaters know this and follow along (for the most part).
Just as the judges expect certain behaviors from the debaters, the debaters expect certain behaviors from the judges. A judge should not inject their feelings in the middle of the debate. For example, after a speaker finishes, the judge should not say anything, especially, "wow, that was one of the best speeches I've heard in a long time, great job". Leave the comment on the ballot, don't shout it out in round.
